As a part of Northern Rhodesia the country was administered by
the South African Company from 1889 to 1924 when a governor was
established and a legislature. The country became an independent
state within the Commonwealth on October 24, 1964. After
Rhodesia became independent from Britain on November 11, 1965
relations between Zambia and Rhodesia became strained. Zambia
has built communications and transportation to most of southern
Africa through other neighboring countries. A government program
of participation in 1970 took over 51% of two foreign owned
copper mines and in 1975 private companies and land were
nationalized. During the 1980s the decline in copper prices has
hurt the economy. @
